Day 16 - Lake Louise, Alberta to Nelson, British Columbia.

Sunday 20th June (Mountain Daylight time - Pacific Daylight Time)

It rained yesterday evening and during the night. We woke up this morning to a cool and cloudy day.
We were due to be travelling to Golden today - this was only an hours drive away but across the boarder into British Columbia. I'm sure the scenery was beautiful but the mountains were cloaked in thick clouds.
It was mid-morning when we reached Golden and we stopped at the Tourist Information Centre to find a geocache. It was cold, it was damp and there was no sign of the rain stopping all day. We decided to cancel our B and B in Golden and head for Nelson for an extra day - Nelson was sunny and due to stay that way for the next few days.
It was a long drive. The road from Golden to Revelstoke is horrible. It is single lane and this morning it was full of RV's and large lorries. We were very glad to turn off and head towards the Upper Arrow Lake ferry.
The quickest way to Nelson required us to cross Arrow Lake and so there is a free ferry that takes 20 minutes to cross it. It was quite exciting.
Gradually the clouds disappeared and it was sunny by the time we reached Nelson.
We checked in at our hotel and went to find a few geocacahes to help us explore the town.

5709km since we left home. It was a damp 5 degrees this morning.

Driving through a cloudy Banff National Park.

Good Bye Alberta, Hello British Columbia!

Yoho National Park - apparently!

I think this is Kicking Horse Pass - where the coffee comes from.

Glacier National Park - and it's still cloudy.

We decided that these bridges/tunnels were to protect the road
from rock falls or avalanches.

Glaciers above Roger's Pass

Giant ceders in Revelstoke National Park

Arriving at the ferry

Here it comes

And we arrive!

On the way to Nakusp.

It doesn't look like you can fit many cars inside

Slocan Lake with Valhalla Provincial Park across the other side.

We loved these buildings in Siverton

At last we arrive. We have another 3 day stop here.

A panoramic view from Gyro Park.
We climbed up to it this evening to find a geocache!
