Day 6 - North Bay, Ontario to Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario

Thursday 9th June (Eastern Time)

We actually woke up this morning to sunshine and sunshine with some heat to it too.
We drove today along the shores of Lake Nipissing and then Lake Huron and finally along the banks of the St Mary River.
The roads seemed busier today with lots of single track roads and road works where the traffic backed up for ages. We passed through small communities, several with Spanish sounding names maybe due to Spanish immigrants who helped to build the railway.
We also passed through some Menonite areas and briefly saw a horse and trap cross the road in front of us.
We were expecting Sault Sainte Marie to be bleak and industrial but they are working on rejuvenating the water front and it is a really pretty place to walk. We also crossed over onto the island in the middle of the river and walked across the locks.
They obviously have a good geocaching community here as there were too many caches to find - quite a lot of large statues too!
The sun was really warm today which made everything thing look brighter from the green of the trees to the blue of the sky!
This family was sleeping outside our room this morning!

The distance travelled yesterday bought us up to 2040km since we left home.

We went through one small community where they seemed to
be making teepees to sell

We saw Sudbury in the distance.

We drove along the railway line for most of the day but this was the only sign
of it being used, lots of logs waiting for an engine to move them on.

Evidence of Spanish settlers - another place was called Espanola

Duelling deer at a tourist information stop - and a nearby geocache!

A picnic by the river. There were signs nearby which asked you not to feed the bears. We were glad they told us that or we would have been sharing our bread and cheese.

Special rubbish bins that only human hands can open - not bear paws!

The best big thing so far - an absolutely huge adirondack chair!

The temperature warmed up and the clouds disappeared!

At Echo Bay there was a huge one dollar coin - a Loonie - made to celebrate an anniversary of the coin - we can't remember which one though but we did get a cache here too!

That white truck had little wheels fixed on it so it could
drive along the railway lines!

I got so fed up swapping between sunglasses and reading glasses in the car
that I just decided to wear them both!

The bridge from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada to
Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, US

Me and some new bear friends!

A huge table and chairs - there's a geocache in this picture somewhere too

A totem pole made from hubcaps and old tyres.

Sitting in the sun having a drink and watching America!

A beautiful brick building - an old Post Office - by the locks
A beautiful sunset over 'The Soo'!
