Saturday 11th June (Eastern time to Central Time)
The bed and breakfast we stayed in last night was in a beautiful spot right on the lake. As we ate breakfast this morning we could see the sun trying to break through the mist. As we began our journey the sun appeared and we had a lovely day - although the strong wind was a bit chilly in the shade.
It was another long journey today on roads that seemed never ending due to the monotony.
The first part of the day to Thunder Bay was along the lake and we had lovely views but then the road became just flanked by trees for miles. Again the occasional town seemed run down and we wondered where people shopped for food - for anything! They must just accept driving for miles as a way of life.
It was exciting to arrive in Thunder Bay and to be able to visit the memorial to Terry Fox. Until I came to Canada I hadn't heard about him - but what an inspiration. He lost a leg to bone cancer when he was 18 but that didn't stop him endeavouring to run across the country to raise money and awareness for cancer research. He started in St Johns, Newfoundland heading for Vancouver but he had to give up when he reached Thunder Bay when his cancer reappeared.
Having driven most of that distance I cannot imagine how he did it - but his memory lives on each year and has raised millions of dollars.
We are staying in Dryden tonight at a small log cabin style hotel by the river. The view is of a paper mill - not very pretty but providing jobs for the locals.
WE got some geocaches tonight - of course - and were surprised to see familiar names in the logs. It seems that some of our geocaching friends from home have been this way too!
