Day 10 - Winnipeg, Manitoba to Regina, Saskatchewan.

Monday 13th June (Central Time with day light savings to Central Time without daylight savings)

Today we hit the prairies. I'm not sure what we were expecting but they weren't it! Everyone had told us how boring they were, flat and uninteresting - and that's what we were expecting.
Well, they were flat, and there weren't that many trees - but wow!
What a huge sky, a huge blue sky today and we could see for miles and miles and miles. It was amazing.
There were gentle hills at times and trees planted around homes as well as along the side of the road. There were fields with cows and their calves. There were fields of crops, and there were lots of places to stop and take it all in.
Winnipeg did take a long time to leave this morning, there seem to be road works everywhere but soon we were out in the country side.
We knew that we had a long drive - the logest so far - so we stopped frequently at little towns to collect a couple of caches, and that seemed to help break the day up.
For several days we have driven through trees, unable to see anything but trees and the occasional rock or lake. Today it was pleasurable to be able to see such a long way - I love the prairies!
The sunrise through the strange coloured bars outside our window.

You don't see that very often. Drive 571km then turn right!!!!

Trees planted by the side of the road to try to protect the cars from the wind.

The worlds largest coke can! (it's actually a water tower)!

So the Trans Canada highway is called the YellowHead
route through Manitoba.

We stopped here to get a geocache - I don't know what was growing nearby but it smelt lovely!

Houses were surrounded by trees like small oasis!

It really is quite flat at times.

Another house surrounded by trees.

You can certainly see where you are going!

This reminded me of a child's perspective drawing!

Trees bent into strange shapes by the wind.

One of ZZTop cutting the grass!!!!

And we leave Manitoba and enter Saskatchewan - what we weren't expecting was a hours time change because they do not use summer daylight saving.

Instead of big things these were small grain elevators - and there was a geocache in one of them! A very tricky find indeed!

Crossing the train line into the small town of Wolseley.

We went to Wolseley because we saw a sign saying they had a 'swing' bridge and we didn't know what it was.

Gary had a lot of fun making the bridge swing and bounce up and down!
I just held on tightly.

A pretty house in Wolseley.

A 'small' cache!

The town main street.

An indian head in Indian Head.

Regina coming into view.

A tractor shop.

A digger shop!!!!

Our home for this evening. It is outside Regina and on a road with about 10 other hotels. We though there was a trail nearby with lots of caches on it. The 'trail' turned out to be a dual carriage way through an out of town shopping area. We ended up running across busy roads and finding lots of 'did not finds'. We were hoping to make 1900 tonight but the mosquitos and cars meant that will have to wait until tomorrow.

  1. Enjoyed the SatNav, ZZTop member and the fact Gary had to test a bridge!
